Ally was dragged along to her first pole class, mid 2014, by her partner, Eshkar (fellow instructor). She completed the six week beginner course (at another studio), begrudgingly, feeling weak, clunky and out of shape. Ally had been an avid dancer from ages 4-16, stopped only by a chronic knee injury. Luckily pole didn't seem to aggravate the injury; if anything it seemed a really effective low impact way to retrieve muscle strength & flexibility, both of which helped support her knee. Despite a huge amount of self doubt, Ally found Sydney Pole, signed up with Eshkar for a second pole term and instantly feel in love with the studio & all the challenges pole presented her with. Pole became a daily life lesson; once someone that shied away from things she wasn't perfect at, & an incredibly competitive, insecure and envious type, Ally is now keen and able to embrace her weaknesses and celebrate others' successes. Pole, and more importantly teaching pole, has radically changed the way she interacts with others and the way she sees herself and the world she lives in.
WHAT’S SOMETHING WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I was born in an over split(!); it took many days for my legs to come down to a normal angle! :P And other than dancing, my other passion is western horse riding (have a look at Natural Horsemanship videos on YouTube to see what I'm talking about). WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CLASS AT SYDNEY POLE?
Ooooooo that's so hard! Well, as a workout my preferences are SP Barre
& Flexibility and Toning
, but enjoyment wise I would have to say all of our pole dance classes! I love how many styles of dance we have available - we’re spoilt for choice! WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO JAM OUT TO?
Oh man that's also ridiculously difficult. I'm pretty precious about my Spotify playlists, particularly 'Ally - Calmer/Cool Down'; they are all on the 'sydneypole' Spotify account... check them out! :P For myself, if/when I get to jam, I go straight for FKA Twigs, a Zeds Dead Remix or a random piece/artist that's equally as sensual & eerie. I get pretty attached to the instrumental pieces from my favourite films too, & feel the need to collect them for the day I get up the guts to perform a solo, or potentially even compete. WHO/WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL
Well, Oryx (another instructor) is adamant I'm a diplodocus... & one of our advanced students, Erin, is convinced I'm the human version of Kevin from 'Up'. I'm making a rudimentary assumption here that they're saying I'm kind clumsy, have a very long neck & am goofy looking (I do wear ridiculously high, scrunchy adorned ponytails, & have wonderfully tacky dress sense)! :P If I had to choose for myself though, I'd probably say my spirit animal is peanut butter.
